What Is Shut the Box?

Shut the Box is a tabletop game combining dice rolls with numerical choices. A common version uses tiles numbered 1 through 9. After rolling, players close available tiles whose numbers add up to the total, aiming to clear the board. It supports solo play and variations where players compare scores. Learn more in Wikipedia’s Shut the Box overview.

Infunx uses a solo version with nine tiles. A roll may offer several valid combinations, and the numbers you leave open affect your options on later turns.

How to Play Shut the Box

  1. Roll the dice. All nine tiles start open. Begin with two dice and wait for them to settle before checking the total.
  2. Select numbers. Choose one or more open tiles that add up to your roll. For a total of 8, you could select 8, 6 + 2, or 5 + 3, provided those tiles are still open.
  3. Confirm your choice. Close the selected tiles, then roll again. Closed tiles cannot be reused during the round.
  4. Choose your dice count. Once 7, 8, and 9 are all closed, you can choose one or two dice before each subsequent regular roll.
  5. Try to shut the box. Close all nine tiles to win. If no valid combination remains and you have no reroll available, the round ends.

On a keyboard, use number keys 1 through 9 to select tiles and press Enter to roll or confirm.

What Are the Modes and Scoring Rules in Shut the Box?

Classic mode offers no optional rerolls. Relaxed mode gives you one reroll per round. After a valid result settles, you can reroll before confirming any tiles, keeping the same number of dice.

In Relaxed mode, an unused reroll also gives you another chance when no valid combination remains. You can choose to reroll or end the round. Retries caused by dice that fail to settle properly do not use this allowance.

Your final score is the sum of all open numbers. Lower is better. For example, leaving 2, 3, and 5 open gives you 10 points.

A score of 0 earns Perfect and means you successfully shut the box. Scores of 1 to 5 earn Gold, 6 to 10 earn Silver, and 11 to 15 earn Bronze. Higher scores display the points remaining. Only a score of 0 counts as shutting the box.

How Is Infunx Shut the Box Different From the Physical Game?

Shut the Box has several rule variations. Infunx uses nine tiles, closes combinations matching the dice total, and scores the sum of the remaining numbers. It also keeps the option to use one die after closing 7, 8, and 9. This version focuses on solo play and does not include multiplayer score comparisons or variants with twelve tiles.

The optional reroll in Relaxed mode and result grades such as Perfect and Gold are additions in this version, rather than features shared by every physical game.

After a round, a brief review may highlight one important decision and suggest a different tile combination or dice choice. These suggestions estimate long term average results using a fair dice model. They do not guarantee a win.
